ABOUT US

WE SUPPORT

Mahoning Valley Academy offers four programs to assist our students: Life Skills, Dual Diagnosis, Intensive Self-Management and Enhanced. These programs are design to address the varied needs of students, many of whom fall on the autism spectrum. MVA addresses the academic and therapeutic needs of our students and operates from a solid foundation of Applied Behavior Analysis. Classroom sizes are limited, based on program, and range from five students per room to ten students or fewer per room.

WE PREPARE

MVA works with students ages 5 through 22. Classroom teams collaborate to address student goals using various interventions including functional communication training, social skills training, positive behavior supports, language acquisition and development and the instruction in daily living skills (ADLs). Students also enjoy music, adapted physical education and art instruction as part of their weekly schedule. Our family support office provides information on community resources for parents and assists with transferring skills from school to the home environment.

WE PROVIDE

SAIL at Mahoning Valley Academy employs professional staff, including certified special education and general education teachers, Board Certified Behavior Analysts, Licensed Behavior Specialists, Registered Behavior Technicians, as well as Educational Therapists and additional support staff. Related services, including speech and occupational therapy, are provided on-site by certified professional staff employed by BHA. SAIL @ Mahoning Valley Academy also provides Extended School Year services during the summer months.

New for the 2025–2026 school year, SAIL at Mahoning Valley Academy is proud to unveil on-site facilities that support our students’ skill acquisition beyond the classroom with our laboratory kitchen and sensory gym.
In collaboration with Summit Sensory, North America’s premier modular sensory gym design service, students attending SAIL at Mahoning Valley Academy will have the opportunity to learn and play in a safe environment. Our new sensory gym is intended for the active learner. By providing movement opportunities for students to climb and swing, SAIL at Mahoning Valley Academy is positioned to meet students’ sensory needs and to develop their functional communication repertoire.

Our kitchen amenities are designed for students to learn in a controlled environment. The laboratory kitchen located in SAIL at Mahoning Valley Academy is complete with a refrigerator, dishwasher, sinks, gas and electric cooktops, and additional stainless steel food preparation areas. This facility affords our students the opportunity to develop skills for independent living that are designed by our in-house clinical team of behavior analysts in collaboration with SAIL at Mahoning Valley Academy’s Related Services department.
